The World of Drums:The Magic of Rhythm is for Everyone!

Hi Sambingos-

Not necessarily samba, but definitely drums, next Tuesday evening 22 July at the Southweset Harbor Public Library:

The World of Drums:

The Magic of Rhythm is for Everyone!

Southwest Harbor Public Library

Tuesday July 22

Two, 1 ½ hr. sessions: 5:30 & 7:15

Advance sign up is required * age 4 to adult

Call 244-7065

 Barbara Gale of Rhythm Inlet

 www.RythmInet.com

This lively presentation and hands-on program joins strangers and friends for community-style music-making, is appropriate for all sorts of groups ,age 4 and up, and it's educational and fun, too! Requiring absolutely no prior musical experience, it includes the participation of newcomers to rhythm and music, can inspire the latent musician within, or expand the possibilities of those who are musically active.

Techniques used include body percussion activities, and learning about and playing a huge and varied collection of exotic and fascinating boomers, bangers, clingers, clangers, shakers, scrapers, dingers, and dongers (a.k.a. percussion instruments!) from around the world, primarily made by indigenous artisans of natural materials.

The heartbeat is our common ground, so we all know the universal language of rhythm. Music-making is something everyday folks used to do before the age of television, but now it's been so long we've forgotten how to do it and have lost our confidence along the way. Providing quality entertainment and a positive rhythm experience for everyone, this gets us all into the groove.

Adults appreciate the multi-cultural aspects, the beautiful instruments, and permission to feel like a kid again. Children love rhythm, and respond naturally to it. Group rhythm offers creative enrichment and a healthy outlet for self-expression, while emphasizing positive social qualities we wish to foster in our children and practice ourselves: community spirit, geographical and cultural awareness, listening skills, a cooperative attitude, and respect. Relaxing while energizing, developing cognition and coordination, the benefits of the drum

circle have been well-documented in the fields of health, wellness, and the education of children. And everyone loves making loud, joyful noise!

(The surdos for Rhythm 1 are wrong. I double timed them by mistake. I fixed them below, but you still can't easily print that.)

The last post looks good but the colors don't print. This should correct that.

Re: Samba practice 5:30pm Wednesday 7/9 at the Indalo loft

Practice 5:30pm Wednesday 9 July at the Indalo loft.

Remember, we've got the Quietside Festival Flamingo Parade coming up
9:30am Saturday 19 July. We should gather at 9 to get costumed and
practice a bit. I assume we'll be in the Seal Cove Road parking lot,
but I'll confirm that and let y'all know.

We've got the practice this week and a final practice Wednesday 7/16
before the parade.

After the parade we'll take a summer break.

Words for rhythm 4

Wendy discovered that the tamborin for rhythm 4 fits perfectly to the words:

Obama, Obama, Barack O - bama; Obama, Obama, Barack for - me.

  • The first O is before the beat, the first bam being on the beat.

Thus inspired I came up with the less controversial words for the
surdos (which I had not previously been able to conjure up without
help from my Palm):

I have - to go - to - sam - ba - now; I have - to go - to - samba now.

You can match them up to the chart here:

Dear Sambingos-

I just found out that there's a committee meeting at Saint John at
4:30 and then there's the regularly scheduled class at 6:00...

...So...

unless we can find another place to practice we'll have to cancel for this week.

Any ideas?

Hello All-

The rigging loft is not yet ready for the moms soon to be - we haven't
yet had good weather to air it out.

So back to Saint John tomorrow at 6.

I haven't actually pre-approved this with Father Richard or Michele in

The new rhythm (

Hydrogen drum machine software

I came across Hydrogen, a free drum machine program for Windows, Mac and Linux. I think it could be helpful for learning new rhythms. While I'll admit I'm fairly handy with computers, it took me only a few hours to download, install, get the hang of it and recreate a few of our current rhythms.

Click here to hear what I've done so far.

You can download Hydrogen here.

We can share the Hydrogen files - you can load these into Hydrogen and then modify them. Here's the file for the .mp3 above and here's the cerdos for the 6/8 rhythm. If folks are interested I can bring my computer to practice sometime and show how it works. Note that I've substituted instruments. For instance, I've not yet found high and low cow bells or how to make them myself.

Samba practice at St John 5:30 Wednesday 1/16

Hello everyone-

Our next samba practice will be at St John at 5:30pm Wednesday 1/16.

Note that we can start at 5:*30* - we don't have to wait until quarter of six.

We are set to use St John's 5:30pm Wednesdays for the next few weeks at least.
